REBOOT represents an innovative program developed by BEAP to address issues of compulsive Internet behavior. For most people, the use of the Internet is an educational and informative medium, which has become an important part of our daily life. For some people, however, compulsive Internet use becomes problematic and begins to interfere with normal living, resulting in having a negative impact upon oneself, family, friends, work, school, and life in general. Compulsive Internet behaviors affect approximately 5 to 10% of the population. REBOOT is a program which offers assessment and counseling services while developing an individualized treatment strategy to address problematic Internet behaviors.
Like substance use or gambling, compulsive Internet behaviors fall on a continuum of behaviors ranging from periods of occasional/sporadic ‘abuse’ to a more life-consuming dependency. Internet abuse may take the form of excessive use of technology (i.e., computers/Internet, cell phone, PDA, mp3 players, gaming consoles), which begins to interfere with one’s family, friends, work, and/or school. Internet dependency can better be understood by comparing it to individuals addicted to alcohol or other drugs. The individual is physically dependent on the Internet behavior in order to obtain the “high” associated with that behavior, or as a means of coping with life stressors. Compulsive Internet dependency may take the form online pornography and cybersex, online affairs, online gambling or gaming, compulsive shopping, and compulsive surfing.
Some of the common issues associated with compulsive Internet behaviors include: deteriorating relationships (partner, family, friends, co-workers, etc.), declining productivity and work quality, absenteeism, falling grades. Employers may also be concerned about network security (viruses, spam, hackers), and the impact this may have upon upon Intetnet access and connectivity. REBOOT will assist the client in developing a strategy of controlled use and moderation of the Internet and returning that individual to a more fulfilling and self-controlled life.
